Zero hours contract

I'm considering asking for a zero hours contract and was wondering if anyone had experience of one.
I'm guessing that bank holidays are not paid, but how does holiday pay and sickness work? Will sickness count as me declining the work, so not getting paid for it? That's fine if that's the case.
Thanks

A 0 hour contract means they can put you down to work any amount of shifts. They don't even have to give you work if they don't want to.
I don't believe you'll get any holiday pay.
If you're put in to work shifts, and you don't work them, you won't receive sick pay, you just won't get paid. However it will go down as a sickness, and if you did it too much you might find they give you 0 hours.0 -
Thanks knalchemist.
It wouldn't be shift work, but rather when the company gets a big project that needs some extra staff to get it done in time they would give me a shout. Then when it's quieter they don't have to find me work, and I don't end up scratching around trying to fill up my timesheet. I don't mind about not getting holiday pay or sick pay or only getting infrequent work.
I have 3 small children, so my current contract is unfeasible financially, but it'd be nice to keep my brain ticking over and maybe bring in a few pennies too.
I'm keen to know how the company will save money, so that I can word my request in the best possible manner

Holidays - you would be entitled to the same holiday pro rata as someone working on a regular contract. This would accrue on ALL your worked hours. If the company offer only the minimum required by law - 5.6 weeks (which can include bank holidays where these are given) - then you accrue paid leave entitlement of 12.07% of worked hours.
Sickness - this would depend on the wording of your contract. As you surmise, this probably means you would not receive sick pay - but SSP is not very much and not paid for the first three waiting days in any case.0
