company wants me to shift

Can anybody give me some assistance with the following:-

I work for a national company but based locally
I have the use of a van for travelling to work/going home, the reason is i am on standby for call outs in case of a breakdown in the equipment that the company hires out but cannot use it for private use.

The company now want me to work out of another depot about 30 miles away from my own depot but have said that i will not get paid travelling time to go to and from this other depot ( i think it will take about an hour travel each way as apposed to the 5 mins it takes now)

The questions are:- can the company do this?
do they have to pay me to travel the extra
mileage?

Any help with this will be appreciated.

Ganga:(

If you were to stick your backside out of the company van window travelling to this depot would they discipline you or say you were not working as you were not getting paid.
    Be happy...;)
  • Hi Ganga,

Do you have your original employment contract? If so have a read through it and see if any clauses cover relocating your working base. Also do you have an employee Handbook, does it say anything in that about relocating staff?

That would depend if the van was liveried, you could be classed as bringing the company into disrepute.

So it is less than 50 miles or 90 minutes travelling time even if you don't have a mobility clause? So the answers are probably (very likely) yes and no in that order. Are you prepared to be unemployed to test out the theory? Because that is the reality you are facing.
