Part buy-part let, Contractor

Hi,
My OH and I want to buy a place but being in London and quite fussy about what area we live it looks as though the part buy, part rent schemes are our best option. Does anyone have any pros & cons about this we may not have thought about, is it a really bad idea?
The problem is that I'm a contractor. My OH has a perm role so is eligible to apply but I'm not because of this. It looks like he may have to apply by himself :-( Does anyone know if there's any way around this. Can he apply, be approved, then we get the mortgage together?
Any help appreciated.

I assume that you are referring to a shared ownership mortgage.
What price is the property?
What % are you buying?
What loan amount are you looking for?
What are your incomes?
Do you have any adverse credit history?
