What planet are the Job Centre Advisers on?

I have been claiming JSA for about 6 weeks now and finding my adviser a pain in the a***. I saw her today and she had a real go at me because I have not given her access to my job match account. I understand that I don't have to give access but after her giving me such a hard time I am going to just because I can't deal with her nastiness. Job match is pointless anyway - most of the jobs on there are for things like call centres, sales people etc.

She then started telling me about vacancies she thinks are suitable for me. The first one was payroll assistant. I have no experience in that field, maths was my worst subject at school and I hate it and she knows that. She said I should apply for it and I will but it seems totally pointless. She also told me about a job working evenings finishing at 11.45. Now she knows I don't drive and even if the buses still ran at that time (they don't) I am not getting a bus at that time of night. It's about a 25 minute bus journey through country lanes and as a woman I am not prepared to do that. She then suggested a few jobs literally in the middle of nowhere with no bus service! How am I meant to get to them? By broomstick?

I have had to see a careers adviser - had 3 meetings with her so far and that has also been a complete waste of time. I did some tests which showed I was weak at maths (I told her that) and language was my strongest skill (I told her that too). She has now suggested I think about going into a new career. Ok fine but I am almost 60 so fairly limited as to what I could train for. The careers website has come up with suggestions such as train driver, pilot!!! Really? Yes, I think I'll become a pilot.

I know they want to get people into work but they need to be realistic. Also the new "commitments" book seems rather stupid. There are only so many things you can do to find work so how are you meant to keep finding 4 new "commitments" every week?

Am I not allowed to say how useless they are?

OP if the advisor has suggested you apply for the payroll job, just do it. IF you have to write why you are suited to the job (with no experience) then ask the advisor what to write. I can tell you with no experience you wont even get considered.

Seriously, do NOT give her access to your job-match account. She will use that to cause you no end of trouble...

And I don't see why you couldn't be a train driver!

My post was because I think my adviser is a joke not about what job I can do.

I was a secretary for over 20 years but for the last 15 years I have worked in retail. I am mainly looking for retail although with so many shops closing down that is not exactly an easy job to find plus most shops want staff younger than me.

I am also looking at jobs like receptionist but as I haven't worked in an office for over 15 years I don't have knowledge of up to date switchboards, computer systems etc.

I am going to apply but it just seems so pointless and a waste of my time and the company's time.

I really don't want to give her access but she is very pushy and I am not good at sticking up for myself. What reason can I give her not to give access? I am actually dreading my next appointment with her.

I do want to find work - I have worked continuously since I was 17 so certainly not workshy but she obviously doesn't seem to think I am seriously looking.

I wouldn't mind be a train driver - what qualifications do they need and would my age be a problem?
  • Please don't give them access as UJM is just for them to sanction you easier, the so-called 'advisers' will do their best to abuse you and to treat you like dirt
  • You dont have to give her a reason, you can just say no you dont wish to share your Job Match details and dont have to under data protection.
Say you know consider the matter closed and if she continues to go on at you then you will make a complaint.
