Career Burnout/Stress - My next step?

  • I know lots of people with gaps with one over 15 years and they have all managed to get another job.

Exactly! As long as you have a half-decent CV and aren’t too picky you will get a job.

I would always advise anyone who is in the position to take a sabbatical and to take time off work to chill out and/or travel to do it.

I actually find it very sad when people are scared to do things like travel or take time out of work for fear of leaving a gap on their CV, etc. Or when people put work first to the point they won't quit a job and go enjoy themselves when they have the opportunity too.

I quit my job in 2009 and went travelling for 18months, I then came back and got another better paid job within three months of getting home. I’ve been there two and a half years and I plan to quit and go travelling again next summer, can’t wait!
  • Not sure what to suggest in your case OP, if you can afford a short timeout it's probably a good plan, take a step back and survey the horizon so to speak. But I just wanted to let you know that you are not the only one feeling that way.

Wow.. everything you said in your post reflects my situation! It is nice knowing that it isn't just me that sees the same problems especially as our industry really does move on quickly (too quickly in my opinion!)

Haha! My life is far from amazing, but until 2009, when I was 30, I had never been outside Europe. I bit the bullet, quit my job and went travelling around South-East Asia, Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. I also worked in Oz and New Zealand.

Until then I had been quite focused on career/getting a house, etc, etc but those months travelling completely changed my outlook on life. At the end of the day we are all going to go the same way and I want to make the moments in my life as memorable as possible.

Now when I look back at my life so far my memorable moments are laying in a hammock on a deserted Fijian island with a girl whom I’d only met two weeks before watching the most amazing night sky I had ever seen, seeing the sunrise in Thailand after staying up all night at a Full Moon Party, tramping across New Zealand, experience amazing sights, sounds and cultures in Asia and so much more.

Travelling for me is so much more enjoyable than becoming another drone at work that I am prepared to take the risk that comes with leaving a jobto go travelling as I know it will be worth it.

Thanks man - I am jealous of you already... in fact that certainly does inspire me to do the same thing as yourself in the near future.. as life must be more than just working like a drone 5 days a week.

Would you like to travel? When you quit your job is there anything holding you back from travelling?

If the answers are 'yes' and 'no' and you have a bit of money behind you then do it!
