Hi there everyone, i got a call from asda last week offering me a xmas temporary job :j.
I am just a little worried about a few things...first she told me my days/times of work and has invited me to pick my uniform up on friday and induction saturday, does this mean i deffinatly got the job no matter what my references say? reason i ask is that i have just provided details of my preveous employer as a reference but i am un sure as what they will say as i was off sick 3 times in 12 week which at my last sickness was when i recieved my notice ( didnt have the budget to keep temps) i never returned, purely because my third absence would have resulted as a dissmissal! i was off because basically the job made me ill i was pushed in at the deep end with 0 training and was expected to do the job plus manage difficult customers without knowing the job!..anyway i am asking...if they contact my preveous employer and they mention about this sick leave will they retract their offer?

Also what is the pay for a xmas temp?
what are the chances of over time? because 11 hours per week is not enough to live on?
and what are the chances of been kept on afterwards? because i know a lot of employers say there is a good chance of perminant employment..knowing there is no chance!
do i have to provide any items of uniform?
and finally what is the training like? i dont want a repeat performance from my last company i need propper training and support? sorry to sound so negative but this is my second job and i do have a mental disability! so i would like to know what i am about to face? they all seem really friendly at asda and it looks a great place to work? ( i not afraid of hard work more the better )
thanks :)
p.s i am on the chilled section?

  • Hi,

I used to work on the chilled area, simple role, restocking shelves, date rotation etc.

Depending on age, £6 give or take a few pence is what you will get paid, unless its nights?

To get the gig long term, I would build a strong relationship with the dept manager along with all shift managers, go the extra mile, even if means you have to stay on a hr or two - just get your face and hard work noticed.

  • I'd suggest the great thing from an employer's point of view is that temp work is like an extended interview. If you fail to cut the mustard, they'll just let you go.
As far as training goes, I've no idea, but I'd suggest avoid the meat counter if you haven't been trained with the slicer.

The minimum wage for 21+ is £6.31.

OP, they may dismiss you even after you have started if you have poor references. I would make them aware in advance that one may not be so good - in which case your honesty may encourage them to overlook it and give you a chance.
  • thanks all, some good advice here.
    I really appreciate it :)
