money for Christmas

i got a promotion in September which resulted in a pay rise. I'm hoping the backdated money wil be paid in this months wages and shouldbe approx £300-400 .

I have been notified by OR that I will have to pay estimated £205 IPA for the duration of my NT tax code which hasn't started yet (went BR in September)

I will notify the OR when I get my wages but was hoping to have the extra cash for Christmas shopping . Do you think the OR will take all my back pay ?

Hi - I had a small payrise and got the back pay in September. I emailed my OR and told him, but so far haven't heard a thing. If you were on just a NT IPA, it may be that averaged out there isn't enough extra each month to make it worth the time and effort of the OR changing it now....if your lucky :)

However, you must tell the OR within 21 days so just send a short email with the amount per month extra you will get and leave it at that. The ball is in the ORs court then but if the OR does want it I'm afraid Christmas is not classed as a 'reasonable expense' :(
  • If you had an unexpected cost of around the £300-400 mark, say for example your fridge freezer broke then I'm sure the OR would take that into account.

Hi...worst case scenario...the OR will want the extra gross pay you receive..ie, what would have been paid, in tax.

That would still leave you with the nett amount...no more than what you would have received had you not been undischarged BR?

Problem is, will your income subsequently go into a surplus?

what a surprise ! I rang the OR to advise about my back pay. OR said she wasn't Intersted as it was not a considerable amount of money.

However, I was very surprised when I said that I was informing her because I was afraid she might look at my account and wonder where the extra money cam from, even though it is a one off. She told me they only usually look at the bank account once when your are first BR and submit your SOA, and they just trust that you will tell them of any extra income after that.

I also offered my new Barclays account details and she wasn't interested in them either. I really thought the OR watched your account lie a hawk but his doesnt seem to be the case. I still won't take any chances though with the extremely thin chance that I may come in to any extra cash any time soon.

Anyway, I can go Christmas shopping now :-)

in scotland we need to submit a soa every 6 months. DH also received some pay rise and back pay, they adjusted ipa or new pay but we were allowed to keep back pay, and it was a substantial amount! well to us lol

    That's good news indeed.

I don't imagine the reduced staffing levels at the IS allow for frequent in-depth account checks anyway.

Having seen some of the shenanigans some folk have got up to on BRU/BRO register - I think those of us without property in Dubai, Bentleys hidden in the barn and old master paintings down the back of the wardrobe - the OR has enough work to do with out us mere mortals...;)
