Very basic advice needed

  • Thanks again for helpful replies.

I am currently checking out the Nintendo as that does seem in line with our requirements.

I see that there are basically two versions on sale. the Wii U which is £269.98 at Curry's and the Wii which is on offer for about £144.

Was wondering what the difference is between the older and later version. Aparently you cant play gamecube games on the newer version (whatever they may be, I dont know)

My friend and I are paying half each so can afford a bit more. But it may well be that a second hand Wii off ebay may do the trick just as well.

Dont want to jump in before knowing the basic facts.
  • They are 2 different consoles.

Wii U is the new one, came out last year and still pricey.

Wii is the one you want, few years old now but very cheap

I saw one in the window of my second hand shop for £25. CEX (Computer Exchange) sell for £45 and GAME sell for £35.

Thats for just the console mind, so no games, but I think you said you're going to research what games you want?

It also has a couple of nice to have's like BBCiPlayer and Netflix.

Bradfield, go to Game [edit: Or CEX, but I prefer to stick to the specialists for these things...CEX are notoriously tricky to get exchnages through] for your Wii. You get a full 12 month warranty then, and it'll only be £10 or so more than eBay.

The Gamecube is an older system. (there are some retro games that are cool, but this feature will be pointless to you I reckon)

The Wii U is the newest offering from Nintendo. It's a cross over between a handheld and console. Its also over rated and over priced.

You will not be disappointed with a Wii. I have one and love it. (AND - I'm a PS3 gamer)
  • Thanks again

    Wii it is.

Loads of super advice; and it wont cost an arm and a leg. Whats not to like.

I will let you know how I get on.

    Thanks again

No it isn't. It's a console, with a screen in one of the controllers. The console itself is about the same size as the Wii, LOL at the thought of carrying that around like a handheld.
It's the "Wii 2", if that makes it easier to understand. I have no idea why people spout so much nonsense about it. I also have no idea why Nintendo gave it such a stupid name, they should have just called it the Wii 2, then there wouldn't be all this misinformation about it.

Bradfield, do you have an HD TV? If you don't, get a Wii. If you do, get a Wii U - the games are in HD, and the controller with the screen in it enables some fun multiplayer features that aren't possible on other consoles eg one player can see stuff the other player cannot.

Also you can play Wii games on a Wii U, so you still have access to cheap secondhand Wii games with a Wii U.

Sorry to be pedantic, but that sounds a bit like a handheld to me?!

You can play games on the controller without the need for a TV. (Mario, for example) But most games require the TV for play.

Irrelevant anyway, as the OP has decided on the Wii. For many, (gamers) the price jump is a jump too high for such poor performance.

I can't see how something that has to be plugged in to the mains and cannot be carried can be called a handheld. Yes you can play some games on the console via controller but the console still has to be switched on, and it doesn't have much range.

I haven't experience any performance problems with my Wii U. It was worth buying just for Pikmin 3 and Lego City Undercover, they look good, have fun gameplay, and make great use of the Wii U controller.
  • My initial point was that it is a cross between handheld and console. I didnt say it was uniquely one or the other.
Sure, you may need the main console in order to play games, but the controller is, essentially, a game boy colour...

Well, for me, it does not matter. I am definitely getting the Wii.

It is quite amazing that I came on here looking for advice on the Xbox 360 and had never heard of the Wii. After taking notice of the advice given on here I have checked out the feedback from Wii users and the positive feedback is very, very encouraging in terms of a console that will do exactly what I want it to do.

I do have a HD television but I have never found a great deal of difference between standard and HD television. As matilda cs has indicated, the price differential has to be taken in to account and my needs seem to be very adequately met by the Wii.

Many thanks to all who have contributed to this discussion and very adeptly pointed me in to the right direction.

  • I'm pleased we could all help. Unfortunately, consoles are one of those things that people have personal preference over. You dont often find a PS3 fan recommending an Xbox, and vice versa, so you have to wade through a bit of 'opinionated' info to find what suits your needs.

If you get the chance, Mario Kart really is amazing. It's still pricey, but definitely worth every penny x
