PAYE - Self Assessment States I owe

Options
Hi,

I normally pay my tax via PAYE. Due to the changes in Child Benefit I now have to do a self assessment. I know that my pension contributions bring me below the threshold above which one has to pay some back so was not concerned.

So I've done the assessment and it states I owe them about three hundred quid that they'll take back by changing my tax code!

Should I be digging out all my payslips and working things out from scratch or is this normal?

I get paid bits and bats above my normal salary every now and again. (Unsocial hours payments, mileage (above the HMRC rates), and a few other bits.) I thought these all get captured by PAYE. Obviously not! Unless they are being taken from me this year through PAYE. (If so, does this mean there may be an over payment this year?)

I am not massively concerned as I am tempted to trust the system. But I would be interested in views.

Mark
