homemade beauty advent calandar

I've been hearing lots about these beauty advent calendars and how people are very excited about them. Am thinking of making one for my mum next year (don't have the time or money this year). I want to make it nice, but I want to keep control of the costs.

I have a few ideas:

Ikea have some advent calandar gift bags, but they are £8 so I should try and find them cheaper.

Find grabbits, bargains and freebies

Collect magazine freebies

Break up gift sets which can make a few days presents

Get a few perfume samples from beauty counters

Any other tips or ideas would be welcome.

  • What a fab idea!
I have just bought some M&S handcreams that are mini sizes £3.50 proper price for the set but they were half price so £1.75. Not bad for 4 days worth :)
  • Also, poundland have a garland with pegs on that are numbered 1-24. You could peg little paper bags onto each peg?

What a great idea. I will keep an eye out for stuff for my mum, sister and nieces for next year :D

    Thanks OP

Perhaps we could keep this thread going with updates of what we have bought for the bags?

My budget is £35 maximum, any more and I may as well buy one.

I had a bit of inspiration this morning with regards to the advent bags (I will need 24). I may see if I can find an origami tutorial. Very ambitious, I know. I have some plain parcel wrap type wrapping paper, which could work well for the bags.

Such a lovely idea. We've got a lovely wooden advent calendar with drawers but not used it for a couple of years as the children (7 & 5) fought over who opened the drawers so they have the 99p choc ones!
Have decided to stock it up for hubby as a surprise and have searched for free samples of fragrances, coffee etc and will put different sweets in other drawers. I just hope a free sample arrives soon or the first few days may be a bit samey!

  • The Glamour magazine currently out (pink background & Katy Perry on the cover) has 2 freebies for £2;

    1. A free Nails Inc nail polish in a box (full size)

    2. A body shop gift card with a minimum of £3 credit on it

2 "free" gifts for the price of the magazine! Both could go into the Beauty Advent Calender

I've used the glamour offer already, but I may get another one.

I bought my first gift today - a small nail varnish remover for 52p in superdrug.

What a good idea! I found this blog for making Advent calendar boxes-if you look towards the bottom of the article there's a link to a PDF file showing you how to make the actual boxes:

I went in home bargains on Friday and bought an advent calender with 24 small Christmas stockings pegged onto a string, cost £4.99. Each boot would easily fit a nail varnish sized bottle in it.

Maybe they will go to half price after Christmas.

Thank you so much for this. The little boxes are fab and means I can make them for next to nothing.

32b - I keep hearing about hone bargains on here, but have never seen a store anywhere. Just googled and a store is opening near my mum's in a few weeks. Can't wait to check it out.
