Seperate email ?

I've heard its a good idea to have a separate email specially for job search, does anyone on here do that ? Do you create folders within your email to keep track of jobsearch ?

I am on Twitter, Facebook, have family emailing me, some sites i.e. Manchester United like to keep up with news so registered with their mailing list, my bank I have my email registered on there - is it best to keep all these on a separate email ?

Thank you

I have a my.real.name@email address which I used for jobsearch, that way anything important didn't get lost in a deluge of spam.
I also have my main email for friends, family etc.
I have another email that I use for competitions and offers plus being on outlook I can create an alias email at any time.

What about anything like if you use online banking, any sites you like to keep up with news from i.e. sports, music - would you keep all that kind of stuff on the friends, family etc ? :)

I'd say it depends partly on what your email address is.

One of my sons used to use a name which would not have 'sold' his undoubted ability to employers: mercifully he outgrew it before graduating. I'm less than impressed by applications from people whose address includes any of the words 'fluffy', 'bunny', 'princess', or whose email address suggests in other ways that they are not a serious professional.

Other than that, how you organise your inbox is up to you ...

Claire - you can use several email addresses.

If there is one you use most often keep for banking and sites that you use most.

You can have an alternate email add for comps surveys etc.

If there are any sites that require an email add (eg comprison sites you could have another one or just put in a fake!)

the only time you need a separate email address, is if your main one isn't very clever. xoxoxiluvchocolateandhorsesxoxox@hotmail.com might be amazing when you're 8 but not something you'd want a potential employer to email you on.

The more email addresses you have, the more you have to check and the more chance of missing something. I have two. firstname-surname@tiscali and firstname_surname@hotmail I use my Tiscali for all my daily stuff (emailing, jobs, banking, etc) and the hotmail one for eBay, Facebook and any portable stuff... if i need anything i'll mail it to my Hotmail one as I download all my Tiscali mails into Outlook..

These days employers(some) search the web for your footprint.

having multiple seperate identities is a very good idea.

Most mail readers allow you to merge the incoming mail from multiple sources so loosing stuff is not a problem you only need to check one place.

having mail rules to keep the works stuff separate.

I contract and have a different email for each job to keep them separate from each other.
