  • Petticoats - they generally wore several layers under their outer clothes! Very effective for keeping you warm. Look out for longish white cotton nighties, preferably with frills, which would be easy to adapt, even if you just cut one off below the bodice & safety-pinned it to the inside of your skirt.

    +1 for shawl, long skirt & petticoats & boots.
    You will be stood around, so layer plenty under the skirt (& petticoats add credibility)
    Wear the boots and tights in the preceding weeks to check for fit, comfort ' to see if different insoles keep you warm & comfortable.
    Practise pinning the shawl and moving while wearing it - reaching, lifting etc - then fold it double thickness (for the warmth) & practise some more.
    That way you can be credibly, comfortably & cosily in costume while others are dressed to the nines, can't open the bag in their gloves & are shivering...
    Keep the top layer & add a toy spider on fine thread for an easy Miss Muffet costume!
