Honestly, as a former interviewer I would probably take offence at the question asked in that way, and I'm sure I'm not alone. I would answer the question asked but subconsciously that would be enough to strike you off my list of candidates.

EDIT: I'd see someone who asked that question as adversarial, and I wasn't interested in hiring anyone who would be adversarial with me, at least for the roles I advertised.

I agree with mountainofdebt's advice to word the question more diplomatically.
What one? Why the person has left or have you made any redundancies?

The purpose of the interview is for you to sell yourself, not for the company to sell themselves to you - unless of course you are being head hunted and have multiple employers wanting you. Asking about redundancies or why someone else left is rarely going to put you in a positive light.

If you do want to impress, you can tell them what positive information you have found out yourself - how much the work force has grown over the past few years, for instance.
No an interview works both ways at all times. Its not just to see if they like you. I have worked at places where people have turned down the 2nd interview as they never liked the office, or the person interviewing. Its not all about if the company likes you.

Asking about redundancies in particular. If I had made redundancies, being reminded of that would have made me feel uncomfortable and less well-disposed towards the person asking the question.

If I had not made redundancies, I would feel indignant about the question, and similarly not too impressed by the interviewee.

I think it's best to try to look for the positives as in, "How do you see the company growing over the next 2 years?"

Agreed, during an interview you get the chance to see if you would like to work there, but asking the wrong questions can torpedo your chances of getting an offer in case you did want to work there.

And what if that answer is a lie? My old company would have said either 'we plan to close 7 more sites' or just lie and say we have no idea.

Why would someone leave a job to go to a job where they could not have a job in 6 months.

If I was out of work I wouldn't turn any job down.

The same goes for the interviewer too and there are plenty of them who ask the wrong questions.

I have had offers after asking why the person left etc

this person was not out of work though - they just turned down the 2nd interview and the company went mental.

I have a few questions to ask at interview and with reference to my original opening to the thread I guess the answers could be I am a replacement, they are hiring because they are busy. From research the company has only been operating since 2009 so is a relative newcomer in terms of employing people long term.

The interview is a two way process, you need to establish if the employer is going to be a good fit for you.

If the interviewer takes the strunts at that, perhaps this points to issues this individual needs to deal with and is perhaps inditacative of an employer not worth working for.
