When a 99p store opened in my town about 3 months ago they had a offer of something like 1/3 off items so I stocked up on cleaning stuff and they had good food really(apart from the awful grated cheese that goes off within a day and turns into a big lump) Poundland didnt do any offers and since then never buy from poundland.

Its a bigger store than my local poundland and get some good food items there compared to poundland I was shocked really.

Plus the 99p shop has a large counter area, where poundland its like 1 aisle going right back to wall in busy times and people walk right to the front and push in, another bonus.

And the 99p store does some lovely drinks the poundland doesnt do.

I guess its in part due to the fact the 99p looks at least double the size of the Poundland but I prefer it.

    So nothing new really.

I got told I was petty for shopping for some things in the pound shops and some things in Asda and some in Aldi. I have a lot of time to shop around but can save up to 20p on some items so worth shopping around :)

I love me some home bargains and B&M stores...cheaper than poundland :)

Love having a lot of pound shops in my town...although not Ipswich, wish mine would have a price off!

  • The thing about pound shops is they vary the product, not the price.

So they sell a pot of pencils for a pound. How many? If shop A is selling 13 pencils and shop B selling 11, that's more relevant than a penny or three off the price. But if shop B's are twice as long then those are better value.

Pound shops frequently get special sizes of products so they can sell them for a pound. So you need to pay close attention to how much you're getting.

These shops are opposite each other., so no hardship to pop between the two Plus next to Poundland is another shop called Yippee 99p, whose answer to the pricewar is to offer a free drink in their cafe (yes, everythings 99p in the cafe too)

i didn't know this, how long is the offer on for any idea?

I picked up several pairs of cheap reading glasses with cases for 93p when pound-land undercut the new pound-shop!!! lol! cheaper than the case alone!
  • I do use the Pound shops but you should also check out Home Bargains - they often have items the same as the Pound stores but for only 79p - that's a big saving - it's always worth shopping around.
I have noticed this on items like cleaning products, kitchen rolls, cleaning cloths and some biscuits etc

Speaking about the article specifically Ipswich doesn't have a single Home Bargains, and the two BM's are out of town (pound shops mentioned are all in town centre next door to each other)
Savers has recently re-opened however and many things can be gotten in there 10p+ cheaper.

    :)

  • Is it really worth stressing over 95p or 99p?
Where I live a town center convenience shop has Alpen 75p cheaper than Tesco. Yes really for the exact identical item. That is a saving
