Nationwide Building Society References

My husband was employed by Nationwide Building Society for two years. A few months ago he was advised that someone from HR in Swindon had arranged to speak to him due to the amount of sick leave he had taken (he had two separate legitimate periods of GP certified leave each approximately for 2-3 months). The meeting was held and his sick leave was deemed unacceptable. A further meeting was held a few weeks later and he was advised that his contract was going to be terminated and was given the option to resign. The reason his employment was going to be terminated was for two fairly innocuous incidents i.e. he sent out a letter to a customer without this being authorised by a manager, and another equally trivial reason. He had not been issued any verbal or written warnings prior to being advised he would be dismissed. Two months ago he secured another job which was subject to three suitable references. He has received references from two former employers but no references have been received from his most recent employer Nationwide Building Society despite his new employer contacting them on four occasions. My husband provided his line manager's details and has spoken to his former line manager who confirmed that all four requests have been received by him and sent to HR in Swindon. He is now on the verge of losing his new job due to Nationwide's failure to provide references as his new employer has no way of confirming that he worked there for two years, nor has he any way of confirming if there were any problems with his honesty. Can anyone advise if there is any way of getting references from this company.

They do not have to provide a reference except in limited circumstances - was he in a regulated role? Has he called HR directly to ask why they have not replied?0

Not sure what a regulated role is. He was working in a call centre dealing with customer accounts and investments.0

Legally they dont have to give a reference if they dont want to. Like above says I would get your husband to phone HR and ask them if they are going to give him one or not. It looks like they are not going to and theres nothing more he can do.0

Surely his payslips will prove the period that he worked there, although obviously that won't answer the honesty question that his new employer is asking.0
