I may get flamed for this, but it seems all you guys are treating OP like he's stupid.. but you're all missing that BIG red avatar that says be nice.
In fact, I would suggest to you OP that you make it very clear to this company that you're not happy about them leaving the messages, and that it has caused pressures on your relationship (I'm not suggesting you exaggerate this but that's your call) and see what they have to say. Throw this into the mix with a genuine reason for the missed direct debits and you may save yourself any charges. Assuming you will pay what you payments you missed, as you do state youre not in financial difficulty.
They may have not stepped legally out of line, but its worth mentioning that when they call and you answer, they ask for personal details to confirm your identity and refuse to tell you why they're calling unless you give personal details to what could be absolutely anyone, but they're happy to give out details over voicemail and text with no authorisation?
What outcome do you want from this if you can prove they're in the wrong? Also what harm has it actually caused? (that's a genuine question, not a dig).
Cheers and good luck.

BTW..(phone won't let me add this up top) You and your wife could well share the phone. I know several couples who do this and they should be under no assumption that it is a personal phone.0
