  • I have just had a letter from them - 17/7/15 - saying I am holder of a policy - no idea what they are talking about, but too wary about giving my personal information e.g. date of birth over the phone. The website is not very 'reassuring', but they have given me a policy number so I can have a look through my current paperwork just in case. Years and years ago I did opt out of SERPS but I have no idea who that was with, and I have worked for Public sector for years so have paid into pensions that way. I assume it is that type of thing as I don't have any life insurance etc.

Good chance it is from your contracting out of SERPS then.

    Barclays Life
    Combined Life
    Continental Life
    Crown Life
    GAN
    Gresham

    Reassure UK (Zurich)
    Tyndall Life
    UK Life

If you have had a policy with any of the above in the past, that would help you recognise it's legitimacy, but you're best off calling them regardless.

Add HSBC to the list too.

Its not dodgy. its a requirement that they make an effort to trace people.

So, you never had a pension. However, it was transferred from HSBC? So, there was a pension then.

Pensions are an investment product issued by insurance companies. Not banks. Even when a bank logo appears in the corner, it is not the bank. And the minute the bank sells the insurance company to a third party then all links with the bank are broken.

Its not a trap. You are being paranoid. Reassure have nothing to do with HSBC.

Many of these lost pensions are from contracted out payments back in the days you could contract out of SERPS. Often no personal contributions were made to them. Just the DSS rebates. People move and forget about them. The insurer has a duty to trace people that have gone missing and that normally gets carried out when the person is close to or in the retirement age range. They nearly always use professional tracing companies.
