when does it end

Hi I was made bankrupt in December 1998 - should this end this year and if so what exactly does that mean - I still have the basic bank account which is a pain and want to improve my credit scoring but when using your eligibility tool for credit cards they produce a zero chance on the majority and 10% chance on a couple. Help.

    Hello there.

Your bankruptcy order would have stayed on your credit file for six years. Given that you were bankrupt in 1998 your credit file should have been clear of it in 2004.

You may wish to obtain a copy of your credit file to show what might be affecting your score. There are three credit reference agencies, and each may hold different information about your credit history.

We have a fact sheet on credit referencing, you can find it here: http://www.nationaldebtline.co.uk/england_wales/factsheet.php?page=05_credit_reference_agencies

Be warned, that if you apply for credit frequently it may have a bearing on your credit score. Your ability to source credit can also be affected if you are not on the electoral roll.

    Best wishes,

    David @ NDL.
