Living off Grid ?

If you are thinking of Wales it may be possible to get planning permission on some land if you are going to be totally sustainable and self-sufficient there including with the build. Unfortunately I can't remember the name of the permitted planning for this sustainable lifestyle and building, but worth researching as it will make the land much more affordable.

Thanks for all the replies and the links, I shall be having a read tonight.
We have always planned to have a permanent base, but would like to own our own home and have built something that is as self sufficient and sustainable as possible.
I fully appreciate the points about managing as we get older (although only mid 40's so not quite ready to retire just yet).
We really fancy building something single storey out of wood or straw bales which would be fine as we get older as no stairs.
Lostinrates we don't intend to live in total isolation, we have a large family, 4 kids and grandchildren I would never be totally alone, chance would be a fine thing but a little bit of countryside would be lovely.

Could be, someone mentioned it to me recently as they were considering going down this route. Glad you have found it as I wasn't very specific! Sounds an interesting possibility though.
We have a small sheep farm with a dilapidated small farm house build into the hill on the Welsh borders.
