Best Mincemeat for mince pies?

Options
Hi,

I'm making some mince pies and wondered what mincemeat everyone buys? Where from? I don't want to spend too much as I'm on a budget!

Thanks Annaxxx :xmastree:

  • You can always buy a supermarket own one and 'tart' it up a bit.

The little snack packs of dried fruits like cranberries, sour cherries, pineapple etc, they're about 40-50p a packet, chopped finely and added to the mincemeat.

Or you could add fresh fruit like a chopped apple and mandarin/clementine.

Have you got any booze lying about? Brandy, port, sherry, ginger wine, cointreau? couple of spoonfuls (of one, not of each!) would liven it up.
    Over futile odds
And laughed at by the gods
    And now the final frame
    Love is a losing game

Aldi had a luxury one, 'Specially Selected' with brandy and port, about a week ago, but I don't know whether it's regular seasonal stock or a one off.
  • Hi,

Thanks for the tips and ideas. I have the ready rolled shortcrust pastry so will have a look in Lidl they usually do cheap stuff and nice Christmas gifts! I'm adding Christmas tree shapes on mine. I got the cutter cheap on ebay!

  • Too late for this year, but after Christmas look out mid to late January? for reduced posh mincemeat for about 25% of RRP for use next year.

Like Christmas cards, wrapping paper and lots of other things, I get almost all my mincemeat this way.

The past 2 years sainsburys have reduced their jars to 10p after Christmas - I got sainsburys own brand and robertsons - worth looking out for as they had 2015 on the best before date.
  • I'm an M&S luxury mincemeat fan. I know its expensive but I feel its worth it!
It's nice to be nutty but's more important to be nice

Don't know whether they're doing it this year but have tried Waitrose luxury with port - absolutely awful, very bitter. I know several people that have said the same.
  • I used the asda one last year and had compliments on how nice my mince pies were from people that don't usually like them
