18 Hr contract with 50 min travel time or stay on JSA?

Must add this is on behalf of a family friend who are trying to convience there child that taking the job would be better, however their son states it does not make sense £££ wise?

Just wondered if anyone could help. It works out at just over £500 before tax. Place of work is 14 miles away.

Any advice I will pass on, even if you argree with the son?

  • Just to add - the hrs are Weds 9-4, Fri 5.30-9.30 and Sat 12-8 - I think this also has something to do with the son not being keen?

    Thanks again for reading...
  • How old is the son and how much will travel cost? It sounds like he will be better off financially, and of course when he is in work he is far more likely to get more hours/ promotion etc.

14 miles = 50 min commute!?! Unless the work is in central London this doesn't make much sense...

Using public transport it could be. I used to work at a Center Parcs, and despite being less than 30 miles away, travel took roughly an hour & a half each way.

    25 mins each way
  • Does he want a part time job?? was it he found out the working time after applying, just be aware if accepts and it turns out not what he wants he risks possibly being sanctioned that's what would worry me and there is no guarantee he will get a job or another to fit in with hours, when I was 'part time' not out of choice it was kind of the attitude you have a job felt was difficult to explain away at other interviews and just another entry on the CV to be honest

Working Tax Credits maybe an incentive?
Most recently I've known people publically saying about having to work out if a position is financially viable, so it is ok and much more common now to me it seems - the CT swaying it seems in some instances

Employers are also biting back with all the nonsense of trials, more lengthy recruitment processes these days, no wonder, because people let them down by taking jobs they know are not suitable, stopgaps seems to cost both sides

Just my take, all good if part time is wanted, great way to be eased into a new line of work, opportunity for FE persue other things, least the days are fixed I suppose, some pros and cons there ;)
  • He orginally interview for F/T (Ideal) but got a call from and offered a P/T role as he passed the interview.

Been round to the house tonight and he is still confused...

He is 28 and has been in F/T work for since he left school etc...

What is he confused about? Surely he can see he will be better off (unless travel costs are bizarrely high!). He also needs reminding that the longer he is on benefits, the less attractive he will be to prospective employers.

He should also be aware that, if he turns the job down and the JCP become aware, he will be sanctioned.

He will not be eligible for tax credits unless he works thirty hours.

50 minute travel time is nothing, he should take the job

Convince him by telling him to take the job or leave the house.

He still has 4 days to look for another job. He can even omit the job from his CV if he wanted. There is no reason not to take it.
