akinika dept phone call DWP 2003

My wife has just received a phone call from these people regarding a DWP overpayment that they say is from 17th September 2003.
Unfortunately we have no recollection of this debt and she got them to talk to me.
I asked them for evidence of said debt and so they have said they will look into it. I also mentioned that the debt would be statute barred (although i dont think it is due to being DWP).
they have said they will be in touch.
Now I genuinely have no idea what the debt is for but they are saying its around £660 for an overpayment. my wife and I were, i believe, receiving tax credits at this point so possibly this?
if we genuinely owe this then we would pay it but right now is a bad time due to me losing my job just last week.
any advice on holding them off or what to do next??
thanks

Hi
Whilst technically the debt may be statute barred that only stops them going to court to recover the debt, and as this relates to DWP they usually don't need to go to court to recover the money, they can take it out of any future benefits or salary that the debtor receives.
First off you obviously need evidence of the debt and to understand how it arose - and obviously whose name it is in, your wife, you or joint.
