What about some kind of IT business you can run from home like web design? I know that would involve a course first but you could also do that from home.

IT work requires a lot of interaction with people. Design work, in particular, involves working with customers on getting their designs exactly how they want them.

  • OP I suffer from depression and anxiety - and now in my my forties have done a variety of jobs:

    - supermarket counter staff (not too bad - you have the counter between you and the customers, shifts vary but included weekend shifts and evening shifts although not every weekend and evening)
    - shop floor supermarket / checkout staff - my idea of hell.
    - contact centre agent - it was office hours, I was good at it but it was sheer hell
    - complaints case handler - as contact centre agent! I ended up off sick for 6 months from this role
    - complaints quality checker - was really good at this, no customer contact (yay!!!) but had to give feedback to staff (good and bad!) and deal with stroppy colleagues
    - placement officer in a local authority placing domiciliary care packages - straightforward job but again have to deal with stroppy colleagues and the politics in my council leaves me gobsmacked. Beats anything Ive seen in the private sector hands down.

So the above probably isnt much help to you - but accounts may be something you could look into (its something on my short list as is clinical coding). I dont think you are going to find any job where there is no human interaction - I think you need to aim to limit exposure to the general public and find a job where "chatting whilst you work" is difficult so you can reduce the office politics to a bearable level.

OH works for our local council in the refuse/recycljng dept. most of the roles there are either done alone or in very small crews of 2-3 people. Contact with public is minimal too. Also has very little contact with managers, as its not work that needs constant monitoring of staff.

So refuse collector, road sweeper (either on foot, or in small vehicle), litter picker, etc
