My husband has been experimenting with cereal/breakfast snack bars for months. A lot of them are really packed full of sugar and taste horribly sweet or else they are terribly dry and cardboardy. I think it's really difficult to decide unless you try quite a few.

My suggestion would be to try Poundland and other stores like that and get brands using more expensive ingredients but discounted in those stores. I've seen Kellogg's Nutri-grain and Nature Valley for example.

Poundland also sells fruit and nuts if you wanted to melt some honey or chocolate, stir them in and refrigerate to make your own bars. Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall made some no-bake ones last week on TV. If you're not using organic ingredients it could be cheaper to make your own.

Have you tried making flapjack instead of buying cereal bars? They can be quick, cheap and easy to make. You can take them to work etc wrapped in foil. I used to make tons of apple and cinnamon flapjack as snacks, they were delicious.
  • If you are near a branch of B & M or Home Bargains have a look in there. Alpen, Natures Valley, etc are always half the RRP. The Chewy Bars with chocolate chips on from HB are nice too.

I agree home made are so much nicer but I can't stop at just one piece!

  • I'd also recommend looking at B&M or Family Bargains, if you have them close. They stock good ranges of cereal bars, cheaper than in the supermarkets.
I've also tried lots over the past year. I have them for breakfast on the way to work.
    Ones I've liked were:
Special K (the dark chocolate ones - not too sweet)
HobNob Medley bars (come in a few different flavours)
Chewee bars (A bit on the small side, but tasty)

    Wasn't so keen on:
    Brunch Bars (too sweet)
Trackers (too peanutty, don't like peanuts)

Rice Crispies and Coco Pops also do cereal bars. I have the coco pops one occasionally. Quite tasty, bit sweet though. Have also tried various fruit bake style bars, but they aren't filling enough.

  • We like Harvest Chewee bars and they are often in Asda, Home Bargains or B&M bargains for less than £1 for 9.
  • Get yourself to home bargains or B&M, loads of good value bars there and often half price compared to supermarkets. I love brunch bars and most of the nature valley ones.

Tesco doing 27-pack of Penguins for £2.00.

Probably healthier as well as cheaper than most cereal bars.

I LOVE the kellogues (sp?) squares bars & tracker bars, they are for me the two best :-)
I had some homemade flapjacks at work during the week, so great I asked for the recipe, I will post later.
  • The Kelloggs Square bars are tasty and good as a treat, but really not healthy compared to more traditional cereal bars. They are packed full of sugar and calories. I wouldn't advise eating them regularly!
