starter fishing set?

My 8 year old wants to take up fishing and has asked for a rod for Christmas but I haven't got a clue where to start! I was thinking of a starter kit such as:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Complete-Starter-Fishing-Reel-Hooks/dp/B006V2MQU8/ref=sr_1_12?s=sports&ie=UTF8&qid=1384205713&sr=1-12&keywords=starter+fishing+set
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Junior-Beginners-Kids-Novice-Fishing/dp/B00DCQ8N12/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1384204985&sr=8-1&keywords=junior+fishing+starter+kit

Are these any good? Or could someone advise me what I should be looking for? I'd appreciate any advice! Many thanks :)

I'd say the first is better of 2 but hard to tell how suitable they would be.

Might be worth a trip to local fishing tackle shop for some advice also some Angling Clubs run the occasional teach in for kids.

Don't bother with either, they are a complete waste of money. Hard to recommend without a budget but as said your best bet is your local tackle shop.
Have a look at the Fosters of Birmingham website, they do a Korum starter float kit and a starter feeder kit at £54 each, much better than the above and everything will be used. They will help you with other bits if you want to spend more, ie a landing net, seat box etc etc.

maybe one of the local venues to you will have a fishing academy.

My daughter and i both attened one of these last year and for a very reasonable sum we spent several hours with an old boy who got us catching in no time.

We were allowed to fish for the whole day and got to keep the elasticated whips/landings nets/ carp mats.

    well worth the money.
