Tax implications of working abroad - rebate?

Hi everyone.
I have been working abroad for the last 3 years or so - in another EU country. I have been paying PAYE tax in the UK as I work for a UK based company (they don't have a branch in the EU country - I just work remotely).
Technically I believe I should have been paying tax in the country that I live (although the country that I live doesn't actually care as long as I pay tax at source they are happy). Although the UK have been happy to take my tax and NI they say I am not entitled to child benefit or tax credit as I am not a resident (although I would qualify if I was living in the UK). I don't qualify in the country I live for these benefits as I don't pay tax here. You see my issue now!
So I want to know if I shouldn't have been paying tax in the UK for the last 3 years can I claim it back and then pay 3 years tax in the country I do live in? Will the UK give me a rebate for the last 3 years if, as they say, I should have paid it as I wasn't a UK resident?
Thanks for your help!!!

If you are paid from the UK on a PAYE basis you cannot reclaim it - you are liable to pay the tax. Residence and tax liability do not necessarily go hand in hand. There are exceptions, oil workers and certain crown servants, but your employer would know if you fell into one of those categories.0

I can't answer, but this seems unfair and i'm sure there must be some sort of reciprocal agreement. In for further info.0

This would imply there is a reciprocal agreement.0
