Help on mortgage payment whilst on CA /IS

Options
Hi guys, newbie here, and yes I too wanna be MF.

Question.
I've always worked full time, and yes I have 2 kids 10mths, and the other 6 years.

I grew up with my nan,and In turn have returned the favour by looking after her, she's 91 and begged me not to put her in a home.

Due to all her illnesses. And me returning to work I seeked advise from CAB who advised best if I stayed and looked after her, instead of getting home help as I would get IS, CA and a payment towards the mortgage.

To my question... if I am getting help from I think dwp/housing/or where ever the funds come from, am I able to make over payments or not.

As I said I've always worked and currently getting an over payment in tax credits which could go towards these payments, but what I don't want is not to get the help because I am able to afford my monthly payments.

Your answers are greatly appreciated.

  • I get a really small amount of child tax credit and I am able to make OPs....I thought your benefits were there for you to spend the way you wanted to??? Best check with an expert though....good for you in looking after nan too
    Original mortgage £154,850 (2013)
    Mortgage now £148,370.15:beer:

    Original savings £0 (2013)
Savings now £3000 in ISA and premium bonds
£60 in mini savings pot, £600 in Xmas vouchers
  • Another non-expert here, whilst I imagine that the bank would take overpayments regardless of the source, it is strongly advised not to be OPing until you have sufficient savings in place, usually 6 months living expenses. Otherwise you are taking quite a risk to use up all your available funds.

But if she has sufficient savings she won't get the benefits. I'm not sure how much they allow but I know once you have a certain amount they don't pay carer allowance. Might actually be best to use it to op and have less debt at the end of it.

I am no expert either. Please check with someone who knows their stuff. And yes how lovely of you to stop your nan going into a home. :A
  • Thank you all very much..

With regards to the over payment this is currently only till March 2014 as will need to see what happens come April 2014.

I will see what else is advised as I wouldn't want to keep in my own account no matter how much, as I am a sucker for a friend in need with a story and would only end up loaning it and not getting it back. (As usual)

    Thank you all again.
  • Morning all,

Quick one, had a call from my mortgage guys yesterday.

due to a change in circumstances (now on income support & Careers allowance with my tax credits) they wanna know if I wanted to change my mortgage deal by going onto something I can afford.

What do I do? I can afford current monthly comfortable at present, (without dwp/ housing peoples interest help) however if lowered payments I would be about £200 better off, but then isn't this then defeating the object of me trying to get rid.

Also if I did lower and saved that £200 per month could I then use this as a lump sum payment later on? And how would this affect dwp/ housing peps paying the interest.

I didn't want to ask him, in case he put notes on my file of my intentions, so told him I wasn't able to discuss at that moment, and get back to them
  • You might be better off posting on the benefit board here. I would be worried that OPing could be construed as deprivation of assets to deliberately keep yourself under the savings limit for income support.
