Some great advice here, thanks to all who replied... and wow, marybelle01, four to five A4 pages! What type of job is that if you don't mind me asking?
I guess a lot of it comes down to the art of tailoring your application to specific employers, which can be difficult because you can't always be sure who is reading it and what that person wants. I think I may try cutting down my cover letters and being more concise, as a few of you have mentioned.
