If register on the electoral roll, will my debts bite me in the !!!!?

I would go on the electoral roll - not only for your credit, but also so that you can use your rights as a UK citizen to vote.£4000 challenge

Yeah, I'm going to register now anyway as my credit file doesn't look anywhere near as bad as I had feared.

I've not wanted to vote in the past though. I think perhaps I'd rather cowardly be a victim of the party in power than live with the feeling of being deceived and the guilt of putting them there. Basically, I just don't trust any of them! e.g. I'd have probably voted Labour a decade ago (if I was old enough) as they promised to drastically improve the health and education systems...Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no. 567- Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts0 -
It is not a breach of the Data Protection Act to use the electoral roll to chase people who have bad debts. However if you can clearly identify yourself as not being that person and they continue to pursue you then you can complain it is a breach of the Data Protection Act for that company to continue to process your personal data.
The Student Loans Company have an acts of parliament- Education (Student loan) Act 1990 and Education (Student Loan) Act 1998 - which means they have different laws governing how they can purse people for debts.
If other companies i.e. Barclaycard try and pursue you for debts more than 6 years old legally you can tell them where to go. However check that they didn't have a relation's address for you which you used as a UK address, while you were abroad and contact them in the 6 years to be told you where aboard. Judges rule using common sense and reasonableness so if you ended up in court the ruling could go either way.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

3 weeks ago student loans co catches up with me - still owe £1800 (nightmare) agreed to pay off £35 p/m (not too worried about this one as such a low int rate. last week I get a letter from Thames Credit asking me to confirm If I am the person named on the letter. Got a feeling this could be about an old barclaycard debt from Uni - dont want to attach myself to any bad credit at our new home (G/F who is now my wife expecting our first baby and dont want her to get upset) She is sooooooooooooooooo precise with money its amazing - and I really respect her for it! Would Thames Credit be able to "blackmark" our address? VERY VERY VERY WORRIED.....
If the Thames Credit debt is before 2001 get proper advice http://www.nationaldebtline.co.uk on how to respond to the letter in writing (use registered mail) to inform them they cannot chase you for the debt as it is statue barred.
However you need to tell your girlfriend as they may start telephoning before it is sorted out and she may receive a phone call while on maternity leave. IMHO this would be more distressing for her than for you to come clean.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

Persoanally, I'd get my head out of the sand and get a copy of your credit report and take things from there. Easier said than done..
It will be the only way you will be able to sleep properly. I did exactly this with a Lloyds student overdraft. I had worried for about 2 years bricking it that it was passed onto a DCA, but to chicken to actually find out..
I finally plucked up the courage to find out where I stood in May. It was fine. I wasnt in collections and I had actually being reducing the balance! (by means of occasionally popping into a Lloyds branch and cowardly popping a cheque in the self serve paying in letterbox - then waiting to see if it cleared!).
To be honest in hindsight (what a wonderfull thing) I was over worrying about nothing. I was being a very silly boy. It was starting to affect my life. I couldnt sleep, I worried to the point about post and strange cars driving in our road thinging they where debt collectiors. Never answered my mobile if I didnt know the number etc... I kept this from the OH.
What was really sad is that because the account was registered at my parents house I didnt really want to go over in fear that there would be a pile of statements. Now I cant wait to go over becuase its sorted and the Lloyds account which they had very kindly upgraded to a gold account after the student bit expired is dead and burried. Statements opened at Dad's. Account closed by me at a branch. Chapter closed. Lesson learned!
Sorting this was the first step post LBM, then telling the wife (believe me that was harder!) that I'd rearranged my finances without mentioning it to her. See my sig. She has been very supportive but its been difficult at times.
Now I'm clean (pun intended) I've applied for a mortgage and been accepted at highstreet rates, so its not all bad. Just waiting to move in now, but I needed to do all of the above to get where I am now.Starting debt @ LBM: £8436.51 (8/5/7)
Barclaycard: £5804.52 (May 07) - 6.9% LOB Now: £5315.25
Egg: £1640.99 (May 07) - 1.9% May 08 - Now: £1242.69
[strike]Barclays O/D: £991dr (May 07) - 16.9% - Now: £0.00[/strike]
Debt August 07 £6557.94

It is good to hear that the student loan company continues to chase loan payments. We all pay student loans from our taxation, so it is important that payments are chased up. Other types of debt I don't care about, but student loans I do.0
