Withdrawn Out of Uni, should I pay £7500? - Help please

Hey guys

Basically I enrolled at Uni in September 2012, however I then decided to withdraw from the course in June 2013, no fees have been paid because of my lack of attendance and I had other personal issues so I didn't want to pay for something which I wasn't getting. It can be proven that my attendance at the University was poor by looking at the register. 1 Month later down the line, the uni invoiced me a fee of £7550.00. I explained the situation, they decided to continue reminding me of the fee. It's got to a stage where they're deciding to take legal action against me. I'm wondering whether I have they are right, as I believe they do not deserve the money they're asking for because of my attendance and personal issues.

On the contract enrollment form it doesnt say if you withdraw you have to pay.

What do you guys reckon?

cheers

  • Unfortunately for you, by enrolling and having a university place, despite your poor attendance, you have had a place thus incurred university fees. They will not take the fact you weren't turning up into account, as far as they are concerned, you had a place so you need to pay the fees.
Moreover, they will argue that your attendance is nothing to do with it - that you had a place which someone else could have had, the place needs to be paid for.
I would suggest getting a payment plan in order with them - or get advice as to if they can negotiate it.
Don't forget that the lectures etc will have gone ahead whether you were in them or not, so they will need to be paid for.
    Good luck sorting it out.

Yes you need to pay. If you didn't follow the correct withdrawal procedures regardless of personal issues you need to pay. You had a contact and would have agreed the terms on enrolment. Best bet is to speak to them before the debt goes any further. Debt agencies will add extra fees to your account and the uni should be willing to set up a payment plan.
  • From the universities point of view:

You applied for a course and was accepted. They reserved you a place and ensured that there would be equipment, lecturers, support staff, admin staff, sufficient space in lecture halls, an accredited course designed and reviewed, probably ensured non-teaching amenities were clean, working and available (toilets, canteen, computers e.t.c.) and ensured compliance to all the regulatory requirements for all of these (staff/equipment/amenities/course/buildings/insurance) and I'm sure much more.

They did their job and invested a whole lot of money before you even arrived on the first day, as such they will want the agreed amount to be paid.
  • Ok thanks :/
