Thanks very much JamesD and others for their replies!
In my case I've lived abroad for 33 years and will receive full State Pension at end of 2017.
As I've paid well over the required 30 years - more like 35, I have decided to terminate the Class 2 contributions on the basis of the information you have provided.
This will save me around £700 - not a lot but "every little helps" - it should pay my air ticket back home at least!
