Christmas Pudding Charms

I'm thinking of getting some Christmas charms and I've found some food safe ribbon... Do I cook the pudding with the charms in or cook it and then put them in?
And I guess if I have a lot of ribbon hanging out of the top you can't light it with flaming brandy?!

When it was silver sixpences in puddings, they were cooked inside the puds.0

I bought a whole set from Cox & Cox a few years ago but haven't been able to bring myself to use them in a pudding. I just can't bear to give them away to whoever gets them in their helping.
But, if I ever did, I would put them inside during the steaming process.0
