Default on credit file

Wondering if anyone can help as clearly sky can't ?

I moved from my rented property 11months+. I cancelled or tried to cancel my sky account on the day of the move. I spoke with sky who told me the contract would remain open but I wouldn't have to pay anything via direct debit each month- I was suspicious but sky assured me. As far as I'm aware nothing has been taken from my account via direct debit
Today I received a letter from a debt collection company saying I owe £98 in relation to sky. I called sky and told them the above, they said they've sent letters to my previous address but no phone calls or emails(other than weekly promos) then handed it straight to debt agency team
They said they can't trace the conversation as at the time they were using an outside agency to take calls- I still have to pay the bill but my query is when will it become a default on my credit profile - I've checked today and there's no sign of it?
Sky believes it doesn't show on a credit profile but I can't see how this is true.
I'm applying for a mortgage in just over a month and can't afford it to be on my credit profile?!?

I've not see sky on any of our credit files ever so don't worry about it.
