Gas or Induction hob in new kitchen ?

Options
At last we are refitting our (1970s) kitchen. I have always cooked on gas and like it, but so many sources keep saying how much better induction hobs are. Am completely confused now. I do sometimes 'burn' red pepper skins on he gas flame but that's about all I need a naked flame for and could use a blowtorch. Please can someone help me see a way through this difficult choice ?

We had a gas hob fitted that way should we have a power failure fir electricity (rural area we live in) we can still have a cuppa and do some hot food.

We changed from an electric hob to gas for the same reason.

When I redid my kitchen, I would have had to extend a gas pipe in order to install a gas hob - which I was prepared to do until I saw a demo of an induction hob.

I ended up with an induction & I'm really pleased with it. For me:
The induction hob is as responsive as gas in terms of heat control.
I think it is safer - if you lift the pan off of the hob there is no hot ring or gas flame to burn yourself on/remember to turn off.
It is easier to clean as it's "flat".
The only downside was that a couple of my old pans didn't work, but it was an excuse to buy some nice new ones.

My mum had an induction hob and hated it. We had ceramic and when we redid our kitchen this year, she sold hers and had ours fitted.

We now have a dual fuel range so gas hob and electric oven.

Whilst the gas is fine for the hob, because it's bottled, the pressure isn't there so it isn't as good as it could be, but I would rather have this than induction.

    Gas ........... absolutely, 100%, everytime!

I had an induction hob once, it was brand new so not knackered and it was absolute rubbish, and made me hate cooking. Feeble heat and difficult to control, also if you like food it a wok it will never heat properly enough to actually do the job! Never ever again. Spill something on it and unless you get it off quick fast, it is a pain!

Sorry, bit of a strong suggestion here but you did ask ;)

This is interesting as I posted a question just before this about halogen v induction. On that thread there have been no negatives about induction, and when I've checked on-line people rave about it. Now I'm confused :( It's such an expense and I don't want to make a mistake about it.

What happens if you spill something on it? Why is it a pain? Does it damage the surface?

Well I'll tell you in a few days time! what what I understand! because the surface does not get so hot! spills do not burn on to the same extent and it's easier to clean! Here's hoping....

I have an induction hob and it is really excellent, heats food very quickly and is very safe and economical to use. We have no gas in the village or I would have had a gas hob, I had one in the previous house and like the fact that we would have warmth and cooking facilities in a power cut. Induction is the best if all electric but gas if there is a gas facility

Electric and Induction hobs allow you to have a single line of wall units above the hob as in this picture http://furnish.co.uk/features/584-john-lewis-of-hungerford-opens-11th-showroom-in-blackheath

with a disguised cooker hood. This also allows a no waste glass splash back because it is in a single piece.

Gas hobs must have a higher hood and this effect is not possible with a standard gas hob, although there are some recessed into the worktop gas hobs available.
Depends how important the visual thing is to you.

I was a committed gas hob user, until I had my kitchen refitted about 10 years ago.

We had an induction hob fitted, and I loved it from the minute I started to use it. It 's efficient, clean, easy to use, and easy to clean.

I'd never go back to gas now.
