It's come up in private conversation recently that some ex-service people, especially those who served with UDR and Royal Irish HS units are not aware of what they're entitled to in the way of pensions. There are two things I'd like to draw to the attention of those living in Northern Ireland although these also apply to anyone living elsewhere.
1. Any serviceman or woman who didn't leave with a pension is entitled to claim a Preserved Pension at the age of 60. There are limitations, for example if you only served 6 months you wouldn't get it but most regular or full time servicemen, male and female, are entitled to this. NOTE: Part time are not entitled. You guys got your annual bounty.
2. If you received an injury in service, whether on active duty or not and you are suffering symptoms because of that you may well be entitled to a War Disablement Pension. This can range from a lump sum settlement to a lifetime pension which can be increased as your symptoms get worse. Other benefits can also be added to War Pension such as Mobility Supplement (WPMS). NOTE: This IS available to former part time personnel.
To claim these things you need to contact the Veterans Agency http://www.veterans-uk.info/ or your regimental association or the British Legion.
Also: for veterans who are suffering hard times there are grants and other payments available for home modification, winter fuel and even food from these sources and the forces charity Army of Angels (who get very few requests from Northern Ireland). http://www.armyofangels.org.uk/
For those who were in the UDR or Royal Irish HS there is a very specific avenue of aftercare. It's totally unique in the army and you should take full advantage of it. Websites are:
http://www.royalirishassociation.org/ there is a separate link for the UDR but it all goes to the same desk.
http://www.aftercareservice.org/ at the moment this is only for UDR and Royal Irish but it is planned to extend the service to cover all service veterans in the province.
Don't sit there in poverty or suffer in silence. Or if you know anyone who might be entitled to these things tell them. Take advantage of the comprehensive pension and welfare system which is there for you and/or your dependents.
If anyone wants a little more info just PM me.
To stave off any flippancy by the more humorous of our members: NO, this is not open to UVF or IRA members.
