Porridge with salt and cream is fantastic... maybe Emmy, the kids need that extra wee bit fat in amrge/butter for this cold weather? And I would sub loose tea instead of teabags. it goes a lot further.

Mardatha: Loose tea leaves absolutely daunt me! So I am definitely opting for the tea bags. The ones have seem quite bulky, so we ended up with about 13 for the week...I'm having my first brew now :D

Breakfast: Porridge made with water and sugar
    (The oldest hated this!)
    Bread and jam
    Cocoa

Lunch : Potato and bacon cakes
Luckily I had left over potatoes for these, and a small amount of bacon left, so I havent had to spend anything from the rations from these, and I saved the bacon fat to fry them in! :) They were quite yum!
Oldest is at school. so she gets her "free school meals"!

Tea time: Vegetable broth with sausage dumplings
    Orange whip for pud

I dont know how the broth is going to go down because DD2 doesn't really eat vegetables.
I'm going to 'try' and get hold of sausages from the butcher today, so if I can't get hold of any, or if the budget gets too tight then I will substitute sausage dumplings for flour ones!
The babies are supposed to a pint of milk each per day, which is feasible for DD3, but DD2 has never had much of an appetite, so if I start struggling to get it down her, maybe some milky puddings would go down better?

Right, I've got to go and get the rations in ;)

  • Oooh I'm looking forward to reading how you get on Emmy_L. I make my porridge with some milk but mostly water, that way you wouldn't have to use up all your sugar, and I find it tastes better.

    Got my rations in!
On top of them, I also had to buy cocoa powder, cornflour, custard powder, as well as some other essentials (like shampoo etc) and my entire shopping budget came too...

    £29.34!!!!! :T :T :T

That is so much cheaper than I thought it would be!!!

I managed to get hold of a nice joint for Sunday and the rest of the food seems like quite a lot really!
If only Himself hadn't asked what he was going to do for snacks
I managed to get hold of 6 sausages, which were very reasonable in price, so I was able to make the sausage dumplings that went with the vegetable broth which was quite a success!
The veggies were so tender, but really full of flavour!I think it's because they were cooked in a lot less liquid (as I usually drown my veggies) and were cooked quite slowly.
The only one who didn't think much of it, was DD2, which I thought would happen anyway, so I gave her a big slice of bread and butter to go with.

    The Orange whip was AWFUL!!!
It looked a bit like wallpaper paste and didn't taste much better either lol
And the only one to eat it was... DD2
We all gave our share to her and had an apple instead :p

The only thing I have left for today is to boil some potatoes (in the right amount of water ;) ) so that I can make breakfast in the morning!

One main thing I am worried about is the tea ration...Himself has just gone to make me another cup of tea, which would make it my fourth today :o which means I will have run out of my tea ration by Sunday. Not a good sign really, cause I needs my tea! Tea makes for a Happy Mummy... very important in my house! ;):D
Any ideas for that would be gratefully recieved!

Really looking forward to following your progress Emmy, Thirftlady's thread has always been one of my favourites.

I couldn't manage without my tea either! I agree with Mardatha, loose tea goes so much further, you just need a good strainer. I like to use a nice teapot and pretty cups and saucers for my afternoon cuppa, and that makes it a bit special. Good luck! ;)
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

Could you use each tea bag twice ???

I have done this when low on tea and no money and I found it works ok but I don't like my tea too strong.

Emmy, good luck with your challenge...reminded me that a lady I knew as a child always referred to food shopping as 'getting the rations', even though we didn't have such strict rationing here as you did in UK...I still have ration books which belonged to my parents.

I started school in 1951 and we had slates for school work in first year of school...maybe even for 2 years

i love my cooking but also love doing it on a budget, theres me, my oh and my 2 girls.

the other day cooked a whole chicken and had a roast dinner, kept the left over chicken and made chicken korma. Also boiled up the bones etc with some herbs, added veg (after removing the unwanted bits) thickened the sauce and made a pie, 3 dinners from 1 chicken!

    Hey there everyone :D
It's been a heck of a day here!
For breakfast I made porridge (water and sugar) and made a bacon and cheese pan hash, which went down a storm!:T
I had to give Himself extra pan hash from my plate, because he was still hungry...I don't know how that happened, cause you should have seen the amount of porridge he ate for breakfast!!

Lunch was ham and salad sandwiches followed by an apple and a cup of tea :D

Himself and I have been talking about the whole tea situation, and he is VERY keen to try loose tea...for now, I am re-using ;) Really, I should be finding out my teapot and getting a tea strainer, but I just havent had chance :o
Luckily I was out on a course thise morning that provided Tea and Coffee, so I haven't had chance to dig into my tea rations yet today, so bonus!!! :T

I have to say that, even though I had a really good breakfast, by 1pm I was definitely ready for my lunch! Not being able to snack doesn't seem to be bothering me much at the moment, although the babies and Himself all had an extra piece of fruit. We'll have to see what happens as the week progresses!

I can't quite make up my mind about the evening meal yet, mainly because I am so tired today, so I may just keep things simple tonight:cool:

Catch up with you guys later!
