Pretty one, let me devote these few minutes to telling you, not how much I love you, not how much you deserve to be loved, but how I propose to act this weekend. If I get instructions from you, my darling, I shall act on them. If I don't I shall arrive bright and early on Saturday morning, having just reached the limit of human endurance - my honey child, my love, my beautiful, if I don't get my arms around you pretty soon, I shall fair bust. I shall try and bring some fish in addition to the pyjamas you so quaintly insist on - I here and now absolve you from the necessity of wearing any clothes at all
Well, I'm crying now :( but it's funny too:) . So sad that they had such little time together. i can see where you get your talent for words from Daisy.

    Thriftlady's Wartime Experiment day 4
Breakfast for the kids was beans on toast and orange juice. I'm pretty sure we're taking more OJ than would have been allowed..oops

I didn't have breakfast as I was saving my self for lunch out.
lunch -kids -cheese sandwiches, apples, and American pinwheels (pastry rolled out and spread with a mix of cocoa, butter and sugar, rolled up, sliced and baked)

Me - roast pork belly, beetroot relish, mash, carrots, cauli and cabbage +gravy

OH -pork and pheasant pie, salad and chips

My lunch was absolutely delicious and I think pretty much in keeping with wartime availability. OH had peppers in his salad but otherwise his too, was authentic. If you're ever in the area I can thoroughly recommend The Talbot, Knightwick, Herefordshire.

Tea -salmon with honey and mustard, veg and potatoes, choc fudge pudding without cream ;) maybe custard....

My grandmother used to make "cream" out of top of the milk. She put the top of milk in a beaker then used a beater that consisted of a round piece of plastic that just fitted in the beaker with a handle. She'd push this device up and down until the milk thickened-it never got as thick as double cream but was fine on pies etc.
I think Lakeland used to sell these gadgets up until quite recently. Wish I had one now for pud tonight. I think I might have a go with the electric beaters on my top of the milk. I'm glad I can buy unhomogenised milk ;)

    Hi sairy2005,

I'm a veggie too and I'm delighted to report (courtesy of the Vegetarian Society's helpful info) that vegetarians got extra rations of cheese and nuts during the war. I find it amazing that the then government had such foresight to consider vegetarians, so there must have been quite a few around for the government to make special provision! I expect it was in order to maintain the strength of vegetarians too, during the war effort!

I've checked the points with weightwatchers and for the rations* for one adult comes in at 92.5 points for a week. Not as bad as I thought. to visit

quote] That isn't bad is it ?-about 13 points a day, plus your potatoes, pulses and bread and loads of zero point veg. Good luck:)

That brought tears to my eyes too, Daisy. Thank you for sharing that.

I want to tell some of these wonderful stories with my 6 year old DD.

Oh, thriftlady, american pinwheels and choc fudge cake - mmm! I've been on a diet for 6 weeks, (and lost no weight at all during the last two weeks, despite hard effort) but even when not dieting I never bake (or buy) pastry or cake (I'd eat the lot)!

Can I come for tea? :rotfl:

And Frugal Fox - I can smell that sponge!

Thanks Redmandarin I didnt know veggies were even considered during the war. I thought they just had to make do as best they could. I suppose and extra egg would have been nice as I think at one point it was only 1 egg per fortnight.

I worked in a ware house at one time and the department that kept the tinned salmon and meat was always still reffered to as points. It took me ages to work out why.

Oh, this brought such a lump to my throat, and then it made me smile. Makes you realise what courage that generation needed to get through!
