Lack of safety clothing at work.. suggestions please

    I find this highly unusual I've worked in 3 of the big supermarkets and use of pump trucks and cages were covered during the induction at all places so very surprised that he wasn't. Safety boots has always been an bugbear of mine as I feel they should be provided but you have to buy your own,unless you are a warehouse worker/driver then they are provided free.

    If you have had to buy your own then they aren't a mandatory piece of PPE (for your job) as the employer is required to provide mandatory PPE.

    I haven't called you a "pest".

    I was pointing out, in answer to the OPs post complaining that her son hadn't been issued with safety boots, that, at my local Asda, one of the biggest in the country, the people operating the pallet trucks were not wearing safety shoes, (this was at 8.30 on a Friday evening when it is quite busy, and a large restock) so I assume that their risk assessment deems them unnecessary. In which case it may be the same for the OPs son.

    I was actually making reference to a comment directed at me upthread.

    You have assumed that their risk assesment has deemed the requirement for PPE as unnecessary - by making that statement, you have also assumed that one has actually been carried out!

    I think it highly likely in an organisation of that size.

    Where health and safety is concerned - from experience, you never assume anything. Incidentally, what was the name of the organisation?

    Without going into detail, I had to audit a very large department of a very 'respectable' - in fact world class - organisation -and I can assure you that you should never assume anything - irrespective of an organisations status.

    I can confirm however, that everything is now compliant.

    So are you suggesting that because someone has alleged that some of the 'big 3' supermarkets do not supply PPE to their staff, they would not be liable if one of their workers suffered an injury caused by a colleague dropping a 1 ton pallet on their foot?

    Trust me - don't asssume that a so called 'big name ' organisation has all of their health and safety issues in order!

    Indeed it does - as I mentioned in my earlier post, it just goes to show that even a supposed well renowned organisaton can get it wrong!

    The point I have been trying to make throughout this thread.

    Another example.

    I am only attempting to tell you how it is from a legal perspective and from experience - if you believe I am wrong, then fine - I have no issue with that.

    What does annoy me is that someone comes onto this forum seking advice and is provided with a load of drivel.
