my partner has just recieved his monthly wage and more than half has gone on tax, he only works 20 hours at just a little above minimum wage, he also is self employed for 10 hours and earns roughly £30 per week, he has had both of these jobs since 10th september, last month his pay was as expected, his tax code is 0298T-0, im not too sure what this is? before this he was unemployed for a couple of years, we have 4 kids together and are married...any ideas would be appreciated:o

To know for certain what is happening more details are required but looks like a tax code reduction which has been applied on a cumulative basis.
What is needed is full details from the last two payslips, Gross, tax, tax code and basis, gross to date and tax to date.
Also have you had a coding notice for the 298T and if so what are the details, seems low to me.0 -
I've just been looking over his last month payslip and that has a different tax code- 0944L this is the same as whats on his p45, i dont understand why they have changed it

I would suggest first check with payroll dept. it may have been an error; but assuming it was not and no notice of tax code has been received then need to ring the tax office to sort it out.0 -
he's checked with payroll and they say thats correct, i have however just found he recieved 2 coding notices both on the same date, one states his tax code for his employment is : 298T, whilst the other states his tax code is: 645L and the letter states the jobcentre will use this code to work out your tax when you stop claiming job seekers allowance????? now i'm even more confused cause he doesnt recieve job seekers allowace, does this mean the tax office thinks he is in reciept of this benefit...arhhh why can't anything be simple lolSairz xx

Yes that's about it, he needs to ring the tax office to sort it out. Also for future reference best to check tax code notices when they arrive then errors can be sorted out quicker.0

I think the standard tax code this year is 944? It appears as though the tax office in a bid to be helpful have split his tax allowance between his 2 'jobs'. There seems to be some confusion over the second 'job' whether he is self employed or the tax office thinks he is unemployed.
You need to write in with all the relevant information to the tax office and ask for them to sort it out.
Time is of the essence here. If you get it sorted quickly and the tax code corrected by the end of the year then the tax will even itself out and 'should' be correct by the end of the year. If you leave it too long and the tax office are behind and it doesn't get sorted out by the end of the tax year then you will have to wait for them to issue a cheque back which could take even longer.
Write and tell them how many jobs, what dates and earnings to date etc, maybe send a copy of a recent payslip and hopfully they can get it all sorted for you.
