I wish I could vote yes, but our central heating is broken and isn't getting repaired until next week!

I didn't mind up until a couple of weeks ago, since it meant we were saving money, but boy do I wish I had it working now :P

Yes, been on a couple weeks now. But did have it on once or twice in early October when it was really cold.

Prices up around 10% so my usage is going down by 20%, I'll show 'em! :D I'll sit here with 2 fleeces on before I give in. :D
  • No, I haven't.

I simply drink more russian water to keep warm.

    Its cheaper than heat now.

I have my thermostat set quite low (15C) and it has come on a few times this last week or two.
Mostly I am comfortable enough sitting with a jersey on but I have been glad of the heating a couple of times.

I tested the heating at the weekend but it's not on yet. I've gotten cold a couple times, but nothing an extra jumper couldn't solve.

PAYG LPG gas-bottles hurt during the winter, no chance to allow a credit to build up during the warmer months to help pay for winter.

My ex-partner - now my temporary lodger - is unwell and feels the cold easily so the heating has been on for several months now. He wears a jumper and wraps up in a duvet but the cold air makes his chest bad so the heating has to keep up the temperature to about 21deg.

  • I haven't put the heating on as yet. It is very mild for the time of year so my wife and I agree that the heating doesn't really need to go on.

If we are cold though we just layer up. Interestingly if your hands, feet and head are kept warm then you can have relatively few layers on around the torso.

A great way of losing extra body fat too in our overindulgent world as white fat (WAT) turns to brown fat (BAT) which burns to keep our bodies warm in spite of other metabolic systems the body has.

My two girls aged 7 and 3 will be playing with bottoms and a t shirt on in the evening and my 3 yr old has a habit of taking her socks off. It doesn't actually bother them even if their skin feels cold.

I think central heating is one step too far and a huge expense in our modern world. Gathering around the open fire was the most romantic pursuit in the winter and that would die out to be relit in the morning, and blankets were the only method of keeping warm during the night while asleep.

So for now its blankets, snuggles, warm food and warm beverages, the only way to be!

Not a decision I think about. The thermostat / timer are set to 19° all year round for times we're at home; the heating just comes on when required. It's just started pulsing the radiators in the last couple of weeks.
Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc
  • Same as Stevemcol, our thermostat is timed and is set to 22C in the evenings, 21 in the morning and 17 at night and during the day when we're at work.

Don't generally need to touch it throughout the year apart from overriding the timer, when we're in during the day and 17C is far too cold. If it gets cold August even, the heating might click on for a bit in the early morning. Total bill for gas and electric for everything including electric shower and oven that is on a lot, GCH etc is about £900 per year, which I don't think is expensive.

I really feel the cold and will wear jumpers, slippers etc and still be cold at 22C if I'm sat still. We have a good central heating system and insulation. Our heating costs less and heats the house better than when we just had a single gas fire, so I sometimes think that all this messing about with portable heaters as an alternative to putting on the central heating is false economy, and I refuse to be cold or wear hats and coats in the house just to save a few quid.
