Skylanders V Disney Infinity

Options
Right all you gamers, as a non gamer I need some hands on advice/opinions.....

my son is OBSESSED with skylanders (Doesn't have it but his little buddy does) and wants Skylanders Swapforce for Christmas. I also see there is now the Disney Infinity available..... I've read a bit about the two and still can't make up my mind. obviously the easy route would be get the Skylanders as that's what he wants and it has a massive number of characters compared to the Infinity which is "new" to the market but I'm aware Disney now have Marvel and LucasFilm under their umbrella, so the potential for the marvel Characters and Starwars Characters is a hot speculative topic online too........ HELP !! Anyone with any hands on experience of both who has a view, any comments would be much appreciated ??????????

PS. I have a Wii and just purchased a 500Gb PS3 off Gumtree at a bargain!! I believe Infinity on the Wii has limitations on it in Toybox mode...

I have been looking at these all morning, trying to get my head around them. I haven't played either, but from what I have read on all the reviews Skylanders does seem to be better than Disney Infinity. I have been looking at getting both (for DS and DD), but a bit worried about the Wii version of Disney Infinity not being about to support the 2-player mode, and we don't have any other consoles. Just trying to figure out which is the best Skylanders game to go for, for a six year old who doesn't have any of them already.

if he's likely to play with his friends, then which ever matches with what they have would be the safest option. although if\ when they change then likely to want that as well....

I believe the Skylanders Swapforce (the newest version) is compatible with all the old figures (Not the case the other way around) so from a Portal/Starter pack you'd be better to go for that. then you can get any of the actual figures, old and new, and they will all still work on the swapforce portal....
definitely think for the Wii, the skylanders would be the best option at the moment due to the limitations put on the Wii version of Disney Infinity...
  • I hope Disney Infinity doesn't go down the Skylanders route. In a little under 2 years we have had Spyro, Giants and now Swap Force. With each new version required a new Portal of Power.

I hope Infinity means just that, in that the base will not require replacement with each phase that is released

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh From St Neots, (or should it be Naive From St. Neots) of course they are going to change it. it's all $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Maybe not so naïve, at least when new characters are released in future it will work with existing base but might have some limitations. With Skylanders I can't take a Swap Force and use it on the Original Spyro portal and disc. At least if I get DI, the kids can't badger me for a new starter pack each year :-) If Base is compatible then maybe just an update of the Disc is required which should be cheaper than buying the disc and portal for each new version of Skylanders.

According to John Vignocchi, executive producer of Disney Infinity, a new version of Disney Infinity will be released each year. These new versions will contain all content for a given year. However, figures from Disney Infinity "1" will be forward compatible with future versions of Disney Infinity, and characters from future versions of Disney Infinity will be backwards compatible with the current version of the game. This forwards and backwards compatibility seems to apply to the use of Figures in the Toy Box, not to compatibility of Play Sets.

Too early in the morning to get my head around that!!! will come back to that later..... where did you get this info? would be interested to read it all......

DS has not shut up about Skylanders now for Days....... think I may not have an option !!:rotfl:
  • My son got Swap Force for his birthday and he was over the moon with it. He hadn't had Giants or Spyro before, but I can confirm the old figures do work on the new portal.

I did look at Disney infinity and it is a good idea but we have the Wii so have the single player issue, and all the kids (boys) are all about Skylanders at the moment so it was a no-brainier really.
  • Our son has all three versions of skylanders and the disney infinerty game, (sounds spoilt but birthdays and christmas mostly) from my personal experience I would say the skylanders is much better, it is a good story and fun for all the family. I am sure the disney infinerty is as well BUT it makes me feel sick playing it, as in motion sickness, I get this with a few games but not usually the children's ones. I must also say that our son generally plays with the skylanders (he is almost 8) but our daughter (16) likes the disney infinerty better :)

Bit the bullet and went the whole hog, just bought the Skylanders Swapforce Dark Edition....... Looked everywhere and seems like it's like Hens Teeth and anyone who does have it is charging ridiculous money for it (some over £100). eventually found it on a Danish Website at £12 more than standard version so ordered it there. lets hope it all goes to plan......
