Where do the employ people in the Job Center From?

Serious question, I don't think I've ever seen an advert for Job Center staff ever? I recently went in to my job center and was greeted by an entirely new set of workers, but didn't ever see an advert for new workers?

Civil Service jobs website. But there is a recruitment freeze at the moment. It is probably more likely that they have been transferred from a different dept/office/team or are on temporary promotion to another job

Most DWP staff, including jobcentre staff, are on temporary fixed term contracts which are recruited online. As I understand it (from people who know) the vast majority are kept for a couple of years, if lucky four, then kicked out. As Crown Servants they will be kicked out without any employment rights or redundancy pay. If they even lasted that long. because missing targets or being sick just gets them kicked out sooner. Or so my mate who is their union rep tells me!

Makes you wonder why they don't seem to care a lot about anything...?

My daughter has just done a placement at a job centre and they have been super, super, super nice to her!

Considering the number of times she has been sanctioned for [STRIKE]breathing[/STRIKE] not receiving letters they claim to have sent, it's obvious to us they are trying to mess with her head ;)

I too have a relative who ended up with a job there as he was signing on and encouraged to apply. He stayed 2 years, enjoyed it to start with, but in the end, he got so much abuse, he got totally desilusioned. It didn't matter that he would tell the job seeker that he'd been there himself, he got shouted out, treated like dirt, he had enough spending 90% of his energy dealing with people who clearly didn't care to ever get a job, when he only had 10% of his time left to deal with the minority who really needed his support and help. He left and never looked back!

Where are these job centers I wonder. I was long term unemployed not so long ago (long enough to go on the work program) and I saw very little of what you describe. Yes you did get the very occasional one kicking off, as you would expect if somebody had been told they were being sanctioned for missing an appointment they were never given enough time to attend, but by and large the attendees went, signed and left. The staff in my center were a great bunch although I believe not all are like that so maybe the behavior of the staff reflects the behavior of the claimant.
  • When i was made redundant from my first job aged 18 (in 1994) i went to sign on. I was told they had an admin job at the job centre filling and asked me to attend an interview. I was offered the job and really had no choice but to accept as i would not have received benefits otherwise.

i worked there 4 months mainly doing filing but also doing peoples fortnightly sign ons over breaks/lunches etc . In the meantime i checked the jobs advertised there and eventually found a better. one.

I found it a pretty soul destroying job.

Typical union nonsense. Newer DWP staff are mainly employed on fixed term contracts because of the well publicised funding issues. They do accrue rights to redundancy payments and they do have employment rights - the number of tribunal cases is testimony to that.

Most DWP staff work damn hard and care very much about their job. Your comment about them not caring is as ill informed as the rest of your post.

I find it varies by area. The JCP closest to me had few problems and was just as you describe. It was closed and all claims were transferred to a town five miles down the road. The new JCP is a whole different story, and a very scary pace to be. I have been in there twice and saw people kicking off on both occasions, and am aware that the police are called most days :(
