Credit Card, loan etc

Not sure if this is the right place but couldn't see anywhere else that was suitable.
I have been with my bank since December now, This is my first account I have ever had. I don't currently have any direct debits/standing orders that come out of my account.
I don't and have never had any credit cards/loans etc. basically I'm debt free.
I live with friends so I'm not on the electoral roll.
Each month I have my salary of 1200 paid into this account.
At the same time of opening my account I passed my driving test so thought it would be a good idea to get a credit card just in case my car needed any repairs.
However each Card I apply for I keep getting knocked back and I really don't know why. I've also applied for a few loans which I have also been knocked backed.
I don't want to get myself into debt, I just want a card i can fall back on in case of a emergency.
I really don't know what else to do or where else to try. Even my bank said no to a over draft and a credit card.
Is there any advice that you could possible offer me?
Thanks.

From what I've seen being on the electoral roll is non-negotiable if you're looking for credit. Though you could try your own bank and see if they might be willing to give you a card? Otherwise they might be able to give you an authorised overdraft which you could use as a fallback.0
