Pru Health Vitality Changes (Garmin & Nike+)

Anyone else here who has the Pru health insurance with the Vitality points might be interested in these changes to the scheme I've just stumbled across.

One of the main ones is that exercise logged using a Garmin or Nike+ will earn Vitality points like Fitbug and Polar do at the moment. If it works the way the Polar HR monitor does, it should be possible to get to Platinum cashback level on 2 hours of exercise a week without doing anything else - less if you fill in their online questionnaire thingies too. That's a saving of £150/year on my plan :)

There are some other changes too, including some sort of daily prize draw.
Saving for deposit: Finished! :j
House buying: Finished!

  • What is the point in earning these points under the new scheme?? To my mind the main 'rewards' with the vitality plus is the gym membership and the cinema tickets - neither these 'rewards' are linked to your vitality status or how healthy you are.

What cashback reward are you talking about? I only recently took out my pruhealth policy and the only cashback mentioned was the nonsmoker quarterly payment which works out at £30 a year and by the time you have paid £15 for the test to proove you are a non smoker is hardly worth the bother. Bearing in mind as well that vitality benefits are charged for as an additional cost to your health cover premium.

I feel they have destroyed the whole idea behind the vitality scheme. The rewards are now bought not earned so there is little incentive to stay healthy.. (as far as the scheme goes at least ifyswim)

Please correct me if I'm wrong, would love to be, if I have missed some renewal discount or other cashback available as I'm on course for platinum status!

The quarterly cashback is new, people with policies originating before 2012ish are on a different scheme. I took my policy out in 2011 and am on a cashback scheme which pays out after the third year depending on the vitality status achieved at the end of each year. This works out at something like £120 for me.

Interestingly Pru tried to get me to switch to the quarterly cashback scheme but upon reading the small print I discovered that I would surrender my current cashback rewards in doing so. They must catch out quite a few with that one.
  • Lizling can you tell me please, does Polar have any sort of monthly / annual membership like Fitbug does? I can't see one anywhere, it seems to be just a purchase of the monitor (& discounted), so I'm wondering why people are going for Fitbug which has an annual charge...I know you can get some really expensive Polar monitors, but there are the cheaper basic ones too which seem to be the same as Fitbug...

    Thanks!

  • If you're on a plan that has a renewal reward, & if you need to complete the bank details on your account - do it! I hadn't completed it & noticed a few months later that despite not claiming on the policy, I hadn't received my cashback.
They didn't want to pay it - I said I'm due the cashback because I didn't claim, not because my bank details are completed. If you needed that why didn't you contact me. You have my telephone number, address & email address. You send me paperwork & updates, why can't you send me a reminder or a cheque.
Guess what I received in the post?
You can bet they'll be changing their policy - make sure your details are completed!
