Advice needed - Gym membership cancellation

Hi All,
I'm new to this forum so apologies if this has been discussed. I have been reading many posts/articles on gym memberships and cancellations but i'm afraid I've not found the answer to my question.
I'm a member at Harpers Fitness. I gave my 30 days cancellation notice yesterday. My last payment was taken out on 1st November to cover me for the whole month. When I gave my notice in, I was told that I will still have to pay on 1st December for that month. Well, if my calculations are correct, that means I have given them 57 days notice! When I questioned this, I was told that if i'd cancelled on 31st October then I would have been covered by the 30 days notice.
This doesn't make sense to me at all. Is this even allowed? I'm going to cancel my direct debit as I am not going to let them take payment for December when I'm not even using the gym. I will happily give them the 3 days amount to cover me from 1st - 3rd December (taking me up to my 30 days notice).
It's worth pointing out that this gym has been less than flexible with me. I injured my knee in June and having been an avid user of the gym for 2 years, I was unable to go for several months. When I asked if they could hold my membership for me, I was told i'd have to pay a holding fee of £5 per month plus give them a docs cert. Apparently, me going in there on crutches was not enough. I didn't give them the cert as the doc wanted to charge me for it. This is another reason why I've left that gym.
Anyway, I digress. Does anyone have similar experience of this "policy"??

Why would a GP charge for a medical certificate?0

Well, they are entitled to - and as it was for the purpose of putting my gym membership on hold rather than to give to an employer, my doctor obviously felt he could. But that's kind of irrelevant to what I was asking for advice on!0
