Can shops force you to pay delivery charges and not offer a pick up from store?

Went to a shop to buy a matress. We own a van so wanted to pick up from the store rather than pay £40 delivery. They told me I couldn't. Are they allowed to do this? There is nothing on the signage to say delivery charge is compulsary?

Sorry but this isn't the right place to be asking this.
Some shops will insist on delivery, they may not have the stock to allow you to pick up in store.0 -
I would guess that the only way to not pay the delivery charges is to not buy the thing in the first place.0

We found this when tj hughes were in our town. We had a bed n mattress in mind but you had to pay delivery charges, just go elsewhere. I sympathise as I know that £40 delivery costs make it impossible to ever buy the mattress from them for the advertised price. Is it a big chain company????

Yes, they are. There are insurance implications if they allow buyers to pick up items, particularly large/heavy ones.
The remedy is to vote with your feet, I'm afraid.0 -
i would also like some help on a delivery issue please, I ordered from Dorothy Perkins and chose next day delivery as i had a delivery code through my email, that was 6 days ago and still not received my items , customer services do not seem bothered at all all they have said is they will check with the delivery company and get back to me in 72hrs , i dont think this is acceptable but not sure if there is anything i can do about it.:mad:0

If a company advertises that you can buy an item for a specific price, they MUST offer an option to purchase for specified price.
Unfortunately, advertising standards will only investigate if you actually purchase the item and they force the delivery charge on you.
My Dad did exactly this out of principle and the firm in question was fined a significant sum...far more than the measly delivery charge.0 -
So they just say, yes you can pick it up, our warehouse is 200 miles away and only open for Collections on Monday between 11am-1pm.
Were they can get round the rules they will!Helping the country to sleep better....ZZZzzzzzzz0 -
Have you even considered that items such as mattresses are so large that they don't carry stock in-store?We have removed your signature - please contact the forum team if you are not sure why - Forum Team0
