Hi , looking for info for my wife ( NHS STAFF NURSE) Unfortunity my wife has to pay car parking charges to park at the hospital where she works , for some years now she has parked outside the hospital and walked some 10mins to her place of work , but with the dark nights of winter approaching it may be time to buy a parking ticket for the year ( £350) I know that she can't claim for travel cost but can she claim as part of expense due NHS hospital parking charges ( hospital is PFI based in Edinburgh ) we live 25 miles from work :)

Thanks in advance

I thought hospitals north of the border had scrapped parking charges?

Edinburgh Royal was privately built and leased for the next 20 or so years from consort ( PFI )

You can only claim parking fees if its a business journey.

    See:

Thanks for your reply , it's a journey to work that basically needs my wife to park in the paying car park( with in the hospital grounds ) £7 per night for nhs staff

With the winter nights it's now not safe to walk the 10 mins to work from where my wife was parking her car .

We're not looking to claim on fuel costs just to see if we can reclaim tax on the parking .

No, you can't reclaim it. Lots of people have to pay parking costs to get to work (for example those that park at a station and commute) - it's just another cost you have to factor in when you assess the cheapest way of getting to work.

350 a year? Seems a small price to pay for your wife's safety!

You are 100% correct , just seems a bit unfair since it's the only NHS hospital in Scotland with parking charges ,:mad:

Have I misread? £350 for the year doesn't work out at £7 per night. If the per-night is £7 but an annual ticket is £350, that's a serious discount. Still a lot of money, but a big discount from the £1700-odd it would be if you paid each night.

Only other ways to minimise that would be car-share which you'll have thought of. Too far to be saving money by using public transport, even assuming yours is better than mine.

Not really seeing what the unfairness is here. Plenty of other people have to pay for parking for their work. Plenty more have to pay for public transport or park-and-rides because their work has no parking.

Ninewells is another hospital where we still pay parking charges, so it is not the only hospital in scotland with parking charges:D
