Scotcall called round on 7 year debt

Hi All,
I had scotcall come round the other day and say I owe a debt to Halifax for over £1500, I asked when the debt goes back to as I honestly cant remember it (read further), they would not tell me when it defaulted but asked if I lived at a certain address of which I did but I moved house in 2007. I have never hid from anyone, and was always on the electorial register.
Late last year and earlier this year I have had a few debt companies chase me for this debt and I have phoned them back and asked for dates and none of them will tell me, I asked for proof that I owe this debt like a signature or statements, again they never furnished me with any. then I hear nothing for a couple of months, then another debt collector calls about the same debt. As said I honestly cant remember owing Halifax this money, and they wont show me any proof of dates, for all I know the person living at my old address now has used my name to get credit ,that is why i want dates and signature of when this credit was taken out and when it was defaulted.
Scotcall have now said they will furnish their client with my request, but the others have said that and I hear nothing, then another debt collector come calling/writting a couple of months later.
Also I applied for a bank account with Halifax a couple of months back and they gave me it, surely if I owed them this money they would of not have given me a bank account.
I feel like im hitting my head against the wall.
any info or help is really appreciated.

Hi
Next time someone writes to you I would send this letter
Letter when you know nothing about about the debt - AKA "Prove it" letter
If they telephone you or call at the address just tell them to write to you and that you require all communication to be in writing.
You might also want to check your credit files to see if there is any evidence of this alleged debt on there.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
If Halifax think you owe them money, then do not be surprised if your first deposit into your new bank account gets swallowed up by them.0
