MSE News: 250,000 workers to get living wage pay rise

Trouble is there are too many big companies here who's only interest is excessive profit, its the employees who suffer, there is no reason why these companies cannot afford to pay living wage, most CEO's could pay it from their pension/share scheme, they choose not to.0

To all those of you who have commented on the living wage, let me tell you my situation. I am employed as a Security Guard earning £6.50 ph. I contacted my 'Employer' recently to suggest that they increase the hourly rate. His response was rather abusive, and i was told that the rate was staying exactly the same, and that if i didn't like it then i should leave.
Think how much better us low paid would be if we were put on a living wage. I'd settle for £7 ph, but i know speaking personally that i could afford to save a lot more if i was paid a decent hourly rate.
I am sick of Employers moaning that they would go out of business if they had to increase their employees pay. This argument has gone on since the National Minimum Wage was introduced.
Whatever one thinks about the Labour Party at the moment, at least they have raised the subject of the living wage, and that all employers should pay it. I live in hope that all of us on the measly so called minimum wage, can look forward to a more prosperous future where you are paid a fair wage for a fair day's work.
Well, if you don't like it why are you not moving?
Also, instead of moaning about your employer why don't you run your own business, risk your own money, risk your house, risk your family and once you have worked the 16 hour days 6 days a week then you can reap the rewards and pay employers what you deem as reasonable? Oh, and all this time making sure contracts are not being cut to the bone of course...
As for the living wage, this was what the NMW was for but as I have said before it artificially inflates everything so increasing wages to it now would mean cost of living would increase by at least the same % if not a larger one. Having this limit has affected the natural market in a different way to how it was intended.
I don't have the facts but my guess would be that a smaller % of people were living under the living wage before NMW was introduced and supply and demand was pure than after its introduction.
Labours idea about giving a tax break for a year to employers is a gimmick plain and simple and will not get employers looking to change their employment strategies. If anything they should raise the tax thresholds on income more dramatically to give more money to people.Don't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. I personally think they should increase the threshold for national insurance paid by employers and give it to the employees and I recogn this alone would bring it up to the 7 quid mark. They may lose some revenue but that would probably be clawed back in the paperwork and man hours that has to be done to collect it all.:T:T  :beer::beer: to the lil one

I think you will find a lot of people who are claiming tax credits are not paying tax at all.
Fat lot of good raising the tax threshold will do them.0 -
