Personal recommendation cannot be beaten in my opinion.
There is not really a good enough vehicle on the internet that can determine a good broker from a bad one, that I am aware.
If you call 2-3 ask for general advice on how they would overcome this situation, how many of these cases have they got through with the specific lender and generally assess their level of experience.
Nearly all brokers would have a free chat to check suitability and being able to place the case.

Wanted to update on our situation- after going back and forth with Orange four times trying to get the default removed as a 'gesture of goodwill', their customer services department finally got back to me with a grovelling apology to say that this was entirely their mistake. Apparently I cancelled my contract in plenty of time and I should never have been charged this amount.
As a result the default will now be completely removed and I have been refunded the cost of the supposed final payment. Hopefully this should make things a lot easier for us now! Proof that it's always worth complaining on the off chance that it might not actually have been caused by your own assumed incompetence!0
